During our four years studying in Taiwan, we met many people who became treasures in our lives. This time, we want to share one unforgettable experience: a trip with a friend we met in Taiwan.
The friend we became close to in class has a very global background. He went to middle school in Malaysia, high school in New Zealand, and university in Taiwan. At home, he speaks Cantonese. He truly embodies a multicultural life.
As we became good friends, one day he suddenly asked, “Do you want to come to my home in New Zealand during summer vacation?” The moment I heard that, I answered without hesitation: “Yes, I want to go!”
Memories in New Zealand
In New Zealand, his parents welcomed us warmly. They showed us around Auckland, took us to our first casino, and we went sledding in the snow. They even brought us to the Redwoods forest, which I had always wanted to visit. It felt like a dream.
We visited countless places, saw beautiful scenery, laughed a lot, and had so many unforgettable experiences. New Zealand is a country where people from many countries live together, and everyone is kind and warm. I felt this warmth thanks to him and his family. Because they planned so many experiences for us, I fell in love with New Zealand.
When we said goodbye, his parents hugged us and said, “Come again anytime.” My heart was full, and I almost cried.
I used to think my four years in Taiwan would only be about Taiwan. But that was not true. Meeting people in Taiwan led to experiences across countries. I’m so glad I came to Taiwan, and I want to say thank you to all the friends I met there. If I could tell my past self, I would say, “These four years will become even more precious than you can imagine.”
P.S.
Actually, this was our first trip outside Taiwan. We had many uncertainties, and during a transfer in Singapore, we took a short nap in a cinema, but suddenly a police officer with a gun asked to see our passports! That moment was really scary, but now it’s a funny memory haha.
By the way, the flight took over 20 hours, including transfers. It was our first long flight, and we really endured it well…
